Summary: (from GoodReads)

It began on New Year’s Eve.

The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed—and more than half of the world’s population was decimated.

Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magic rose up in its place. Some of it is good, like the witchcraft worked by Lana Bingham, practicing in the loft apartment she shares with her lover, Max. Some of it is unimaginably evil, and it can lurk anywhere, around a corner, in fetid tunnels beneath the river—or in the ones you know and love the most.

As word spreads that neither the immune nor the gifted are safe from the authorities who patrol the ravaged streets, and with nothing left to count on but each other, Lana and Max make their way out of a wrecked New York City. At the same time, other travelers are heading west too, into a new frontier. Chuck, a tech genius trying to hack his way through a world gone offline. Arlys, a journalist who has lost her audience but uses pen and paper to record the truth. Fred, her young colleague, possessed of burgeoning abilities and an optimism that seems out of place in this bleak landscape. And Rachel and Jonah, a resourceful doctor and a paramedic who fend off despair with their determination to keep a young mother and three infants in their care alive.

In a world of survivors where every stranger encountered could be either a savage or a savior, none of them knows exactly where they are heading, or why. But a purpose awaits them that will shape their lives and the lives of all those who remain.

The end has come. The beginning comes next.

The world you once knew is gone and will never be the same.

Title: Well the title does not entirely give away the story but as you start reading and move towards the end it totally justifies the story.

Title Rating: 4.5/5

Cover: It’s an interesting cover. The very first time you see the crow with smoky wings it gives you a good idea that something dark is coming to shadow the light. It gives you a perspective and sense that something will go wrong and be human it’s natural to look for light, page after page in hope to see things getting better.

Cover Rating: 4.0/5

Characters Rating: 4.5/5

Review: Year One as the first book in the series is both catchy and bounds the reader and made him want to know what happens next. The book has four sections- The doom, escape, survival and dark to light partitioned with a two page black and white image. With a sudden change in the world and no one to keep law and order, the fear of the unknown has impact people in different ways. With extraordinary abilities and the fear of being different, the struggle of people to fit in is shown clearly. Some can handle power and the responsibility that comes with it some cannot. It shows, with elevation in people’s emotions and feelings how they either become leaders or villains.

Story Rating: 4.5/5

Appreciation: The story bounds you and you feel as one of the characters. You feel the joy, fear, pain as is felt by the characters. Well written, Nora did a brilliant job and brought justice to the title and the characters.

Let Downs: Well, I have to wait for the next book!

Surprise Factor: Every page was one hell of a turn. It’s like a roller-coaster ride, you are scared but you are also enjoying the ride and once it’s over you want more of it.
